Current situation

I'm currently part of the SMIC ERC project (Formal models of Social Meaning and Identity Construction through language, dir. H. Burnett), building videogames to investigate the relationship between sociolinguistic variation and strategic action. More details here.

Research

More generally I'm a psycholinguist by training focusing on the study of language as a socially situated ability as well as the development of said ability in children.

Two main questions are driving my research:

  1. How are language production and comprehension modulated by non-linguistic factors such as a context (with a very broad definition of the notion of context), individual goals of the participants in the interaction, or of course their social properties (eg. socioeconomic backgrounds, cultural worlds, normative views on language)?
  2. How does this network of relationships between language and the social properties of communication develop in an individual?

My work is heavily driven by empirical data, be it from corpus or from psycholinguistic experiments.

To be as thorough as possible in my approach to these datasets and in my conclusions, I use inferential statistics, within a frequentist framework but also -- and mostly so these days -- within the Bayesian framework.
